Hosting multiple websites and addon domains on one account

web-hosting, domains-dns

You can host multiple websites on a Web Hosting package that includes the required domain and website allowance. The number you can add is determined by your selected package. Each additional website should have an appropriate domain and document root, which is the folder the server uses for that website. An addon domain can show a separate website, while a domain alias is generally used to show an existing website under another domain name.

01 Plan capacity and access before adding websites

Before adding a second site, check the package limits and the account's current resource usage. Adding another domain does not create a fresh allocation of storage, memory, CPU or other account resources. Websites, databases, email and stored backups can consume the same account allowances. A busy shop and several smaller sites may therefore need more capacity than their domain count alone suggests.

For unrelated businesses or client projects, consider whether separate hosting accounts would make access, backups and resource management easier. Giving someone the main account login can expose more than their individual website. Multiple addon domains within one account do not provide the same administrative separation as independently provisioned accounts. If you are unsure which arrangement fits your projects, tell us the number of sites, their software and expected workload so we can help you choose an appropriate package.

02 Add and verify a separate website

  1. In the Account Manager or cPanel, choose the domain management tool and add the domain you own.
  2. Confirm the document root. Use a separate folder for a separate site so an installer or upload does not overwrite your first website.
  3. Connect the domain through its authoritative DNS provider and install the intended application.
  4. Check SSL coverage for the new hostname, then test both the new website and the original website.

03 Example: add a second website without replacing the first

Your existing business site uses example.com. You want a separate portfolio at example.net on a package that permits another website.

  1. Review the current website allowance and combined account usage.
  2. In the domain management tool, add the second domain as a separate website.
  3. Choose a separate document root, such as a new folder named portfolio-site within the location allowed by the hosting account.
  4. Before installing or uploading the portfolio, verify that the selected destination is that new folder.
  5. Complete the domain and certificate setup, then open both addresses.

Expected result: the portfolio appears at the second domain while the original site remains intact. An alias would be appropriate only if both names were intended to display the same website.

How do I keep an addon website separate from an existing site?

  1. Confirm the plan permits another website and identify the folder that will serve it.
  2. Choose a separate document root for a separate application. Use an alias only when the additional name should serve the existing site.
  3. After DNS and certificate setup, test both the new website and the original one.

A document-root mistake can make a second domain display or overwrite the first application. Before installing software, check the destination folder rather than accepting a familiar-looking path automatically. Keep unrelated client projects in separately controlled accounts when they require independent access and recovery boundaries.
