Choosing routed or bridged networking in SolusVM 2

servers

SolusVM 2 supports routed and bridged compute-resource networking. Select the model that matches the datacenter routing and MAC-address policy. A working management SSH connection does not prove that the same network permits guest traffic.

Information to have ready

Obtain the assigned address ranges, gateway, prefix, VLAN and any permitted-MAC requirements from the network provider. Arrange an independent host console and record the existing interface configuration. A remote network change can disconnect every guest on the affected host.

01 Choose routed or bridged networking in SolusVM 2

  1. Draw the actual packet path from a guest to the upstream gateway. With routed networking the host routes guest traffic; with bridging the guest is exposed to the attached layer-two network.
  2. Compare that path with provider requirements. Routed address delivery and restrictions on additional MAC addresses commonly determine which model can work.
  3. Open the compute resource settings and inspect its Network Type. Change only after validating the host interface and upstream arrangement.
  4. Treat the setting as a choice for subsequently created servers. Existing guests do not automatically migrate to the new network model when this setting changes.
  5. Provision one disposable guest with an address from the assigned block. Test through the console before opening customer provisioning, then document the required model for that compute resource.

Will switching this setting repair existing guests?

Not automatically. Existing guest networking needs an individually planned adjustment consistent with its assigned IP and the host network. Confirm the scope before saving a change.

Confirm the expected result

Check the guest address, route and DNS resolver separately. Test gateway or upstream reachability as appropriate to the routing design, an external IP, DNS resolution and an allowed inbound connection. Validate both IPv4 and IPv6 if both are offered.

Troubleshoot unexpected results

If the guest cannot reach outside, inspect upstream MAC filtering, prefix/gateway errors, host forwarding and firewall counters. Avoid changing all layers simultaneously. Recover the host through its independent console using the recorded configuration when necessary; repeatedly rebooting will not correct an invalid network design.
