Use an external or affiliate product to describe an item in your WooCommerce catalogue while sending customers to another website to buy it. The external seller controls its checkout, availability and fulfilment, so the listing should make the destination and relationship clear.

01 Prepare the listing responsibly
Confirm the destination URL, permission to use images and product information, and any required affiliate disclosure. Check whether a displayed price can be kept accurate. Avoid presenting the product as locally stocked when you do not control the external inventory or delivery promise.
02 Create the external product
- Open Products > Add New and enter a clear product name and description.
- Select External/Affiliate product in Product data.
- Enter the approved external Product URL and suitable button text.
- Add a price only when it is appropriate and maintainable for the offer.
- Set images, categories and useful product attributes.
- Preview the listing and follow the purchase button from a logged-out browser before publishing.
Will WooCommerce process payment for this product?
The standard external-product button sends the visitor to the destination site. It does not create a normal local WooCommerce checkout for that external item. If you intend to collect payment yourself, use a product type and fulfilment arrangement designed for that workflow.
Can I track the external seller's stock automatically?
Not merely by choosing the external product type. Any stock or price synchronisation needs an explicit integration with the seller and its current terms. Without one, review the listing regularly and avoid promises that depend on live data you do not receive.
03 Verify the customer experience
Check HTTPS, the final landing page and any tracking parameters. Confirm the button remains understandable on mobile and that visitors can distinguish the external purchase from products sold directly by your store. Test important links after affiliate-network or seller changes.
04 Maintain or retire the listing
Keep a record of who owns the affiliate relationship and when the URL was last checked. If the offer ends, hide or revise the listing and update internal links rather than leaving customers at a broken destination. Preserve useful editorial content where appropriate, while clearly removing an expired buying claim or price.
