Preparing product images and gallery consistency

wordpress

Prepare consistent product images so customers can compare items easily and understand what they are buying. Use a clear primary image, useful supporting views and file sizes appropriate for the display rather than uploading every original photograph unchanged.

01 Prepare the image set

Choose a consistent crop or aspect ratio for catalogue images and keep the product comfortably inside the frame. Include details that answer buying questions, such as scale, material or included components. Do not rely on text embedded in images for essential specifications, because it can become unreadable on smaller screens.

02 Add the images

  1. Optimise copies of the source photographs while retaining the original files privately.
  2. Edit the product and set the primary Product image.
  3. Add the supporting images to the Product gallery in a deliberate viewing order.
  4. Write useful alternative text for informative images, avoiding repetitive keyword lists.
  5. For variable products, assign appropriate variation imagery using the controls available in the installed WooCommerce version and compatible theme.
  6. Save and inspect the product page, shop grid and mobile gallery.

Why do images look cropped differently?

The theme's gallery and catalogue settings can use different image sizes or aspect ratios. Review the active design and generated thumbnails before replacing the source images. A new crop setting may require a supported thumbnail regeneration, and changing it can affect the whole catalogue.

Can each variation have its own gallery?

Current WooCommerce versions can provide variation gallery controls, while older versions or custom themes may differ. Verify the installed version and gallery compatibility instead of assuming an additional extension is always required. Test carefully if a separate variation-gallery plugin already exists.

03 Check performance and accuracy

Open the page on a representative mobile connection and inspect whether large images delay useful content. Confirm zoom or full-size views remain detailed enough for buying decisions. Check every variation for the correct colour or model image, and make sure the gallery does not imply that accessories are included when they are sold separately.

04 Maintain the media library

Use understandable filenames and a consistent editorial process. Before deleting an old image, check whether another product, article or campaign still references it. A clean gallery should improve confidence in the actual product, not merely make the page visually uniform.
