Set each variation's price and inventory model so WooCommerce sells the correct option at the correct amount. A variable product can share one parent stock pool, use separate variation quantities, or intentionally combine those approaches.

01 Choose the inventory model
Use separate variation stock when each colour or size represents a different physical quantity. Use a shared parent pool when several options consume the same underlying item. Document mixed arrangements clearly: variations managing their own stock use their own quantity, while eligible variations without that setting can use the parent pool.
02 Configure and save
- Edit the variable product and open its Variations section.
- Expand a variation and enter the regular price and any intended sale price.
- Choose whether that variation manages stock, then set quantity, stock status and backorder policy as appropriate.
- Assign a unique variation SKU where your fulfilment or inventory process needs one.
- Review low-stock thresholds and any variation-specific shipping or tax settings.
- Save variation changes and update the parent product, then repeat the checks for the remaining options.
Why does the product show a price range?
A variable product may have several valid prices, so the catalogue can display a range. Selecting a particular combination should show its applicable price. If a range looks unexpected, inspect all enabled variations, including forgotten sale prices and old combinations that remain purchasable.
Does setting the parent quantity also reduce every variation quantity?
No. Parent and variation stock settings represent different inventory pools. Avoid duplicating the same physical stock in independent pools unless that is the intended model, because customers could then purchase more than you actually have.
03 Test purchase and stock behaviour
Place a controlled sandbox order for one variation and check which quantity changes. Verify a second variation that should or should not share that stock. Test the last available item and an out-of-stock selection, then restore the test inventory through an understood order and stock workflow.
04 Use bulk actions cautiously
Variation bulk actions can update many records at once and may save immediately. Export or back up the current values before applying a price increase or stock reset. Reconcile changes with any external inventory system so a later synchronisation does not silently overwrite the values you just corrected.
