Using block transforms without losing important formatting

wordpress

A block transform changes one supported block type into another, such as a paragraph into a heading or a list. It can save retyping, but the new block may not support every formatting option or structure used by the original.

01 Choose a meaningful transformation

Use a transform when the content's role has changed. A short section label can become a Heading, while a sequence of parallel items may suit a List. Do not convert content merely to obtain a larger font or extra spacing when typography and layout controls would preserve the correct meaning.

For a complex block, save the draft or keep a copy of the original before experimenting. Third-party blocks may have different transformation rules or none at all.

02 Transform and inspect

  1. Select the exact block in the editor or List View.
  2. Open its block-type or transform control and review the available destinations.
  3. Choose the intended type, then inspect all text, links and line breaks immediately.
  4. Adjust the new block's semantic settings, such as heading level or ordered versus unordered list.
  5. Preview the page before saving the change publicly.

03 Check what changed

Look for merged paragraphs, lost links, unexpected list items or styling that no longer applies. A transform can preserve the words while changing their structure in a way that affects accessibility and visual layout.

When converting several selected blocks, review the whole result rather than only the first visible line. Keep a deliberate reading order and avoid using repeated line breaks to repair a structure that should be separate blocks.

How can I recover from an unsuitable block transform?

Use Undo promptly if the transform removes important details. If the change was already saved, compare revisions or your preserved copy and restore the needed content. Do not repeatedly transform through unrelated block types hoping to reconstruct lost markup.

If the desired transform is unavailable, create the correct new block and move the content carefully. For an invalid custom block, resolve its dependency or markup issue separately; converting it to HTML can be useful in some cases, but it changes the editing model and should be an intentional recovery choice.
