Use WordPress AI Engineer to investigate a failed plugin update by checking the actual code state, error evidence and compatibility requirements. Avoid repeatedly retrying an update until you know whether the previous attempt partly changed files or data.
IN THIS ARTICLE
01 Preserve the failure context
Record the plugin name, previous and attempted version, time and displayed error. Note whether the public site, administration or only one feature is affected. Confirm the most recent backup and whether the plugin performs its own database migrations.
02 Ask for a controlled review
- Open AI Engineer for the correct installation and keep automatic writes disabled.
- Describe the failed update and the last known working state.
- Ask it to inspect plugin status, relevant logs, available disk space and compatibility information before changing anything.
- Review whether the issue is incomplete files, a dependency, permissions, resource limits or a plugin defect.
- Approve the specific recovery action only after the backup and data implications are understood.
- Test the plugin's actual feature and nearby site workflows after recovery.
03 Example: brief the Engineer after a failed plugin update
Replace the bracketed fields with the facts available from your own site. If a version or timestamp is unknown, say so instead of guessing. Attach only the relevant redacted error text.
Site: [selected staging or live installation]
Plugin: [exact plugin name and slug]
Attempted change: [previous version] to [target version]
Observed failure: [message, affected feature and time]
Latest verified backup: [backup identifier and time]
Inspect the installed code state, plugin status, relevant errors and
available compatibility information. Do not retry the update yet.
Explain whether the evidence suggests incomplete files, an unmet
dependency or a data migration issue. Identify any missing evidence.
Propose one supported recovery action and its backup requirements.
Wait for my approval before changing files, settings or the database.
Verification must cover admin access, the plugin feature and its
relevant scheduled or commerce workflow.
Expected result: a scoped finding and reviewable next step. If the available tools cannot establish database compatibility, request vendor or support guidance before approving a downgrade.
Can I simply install the older plugin ZIP?
Only when the vendor's supported recovery process allows it. Newer code may already have changed the database in a way the old version cannot use safely. Use a trusted package and a compatible recovery plan rather than downloading an arbitrary old copy.
Should the AI edit the plugin's version number?
No. Falsifying a version header does not repair the plugin and can confuse updates or compatibility checks. Ask for a supported reinstall, replacement or vendor-guided rollback based on the actual files and data.
Will file Undo cover the plugin update?
Do not assume so. The Engineer's limited file Undo applies to its explicit supported file-edit and write operations, not every plugin update, shell command or database migration. A full backup may be needed for a compatible restore.
04 Close the investigation
Verify administration, the public feature and any scheduled jobs or commerce integration the plugin owns. Capture remaining errors and the final version. If the failure needs the plugin developer's input, hand over the reproducible steps and redacted logs instead of asking the AI to make increasingly broad vendor-code edits.
